“A day spent at the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon is the perfect way to soak up some sun, enjoy some safe swimming, meet some other tourists to catch up with your friends and take in the views of the stunning Trinity Inlet and mountains that line the horizon of Cairns city in Queensland Australia. While there are plenty of nearby restaurants and coffee shops at and near the swimming lagoon, locals like to lay out a picnic at one of the many tables located in the surrounding park grounds under the huge Banyan Trees. Dotted along the boardwalk of the Cairns Esplanade right by the Swimming Lagoon are 12 BBQ facilities that are cleaned daily and are available for use throughout the day.Time for a dip”

“Something is always on at the Tanks - great FREE art gallery; live music acts (usually cheap!); and events are often held here. For the history buffs as well! The three huge concrete tanks were built to hold fuel for World War II - used until 1987 by the Royal Australian Navy”

“Crystal Cascades is one of the secrets of Tropical North Queensland that locals wish they could hide from visitors, accessible only by self drive. It is a secluded freshwater swimming hole, hidden in a tropical rainforest. A series of small waterfalls flow into large pools surrounded by large impressive granite boulders. Rainforest trees hang over the mountain water, keeping it cool and refreshing. There are also council managed and cleaned BBQ and picnic tables in the area with a toilet/change room block close-by. For most, the only way of discovering the presence of Crystal Cascades is by being told by a local, or unwittingly following road signs to the unique surrounding places.”

“This is a great place to visit particularly if you can’t afford to pay for the whole family to visit the reef. You get to see and learn all about the reef and it’s inhabitants while at the same time keeping cool and dry in the air conditioned comfort. They also have an amazing restaurant attached to the aquarium. ”

“Botanical gardens are close by and well worth having a look at all the flora and fauna, the tropics is an amazing place to visit and see nature at its best. There is also an exercise walk to a view overlooking the city of Cairns and the Ocean. It is called the red arrow, this is also next to the botanical gardens. It is medium to strenuous climbing of stairs, but well worth the view when you reach the top . Cafes and restuarants nearby for a well deserved breakfast/drink”

“Behind the Botanic Gardens on Collins Ave is Mount Whitfield Conservation Park, here you will find The Red and Blue Arrow Walking Trails. . The Red Arrow loop trail (1.5Km return) is the most popular walking track, enjoy the rainforest whilst ascending up to the lookout , with views over the city and out to Green Island. A short link trail a further 50 metres up is where the Blue Arrow loop trail (4.5Km return) starts. The Blue Arrow trail takes you through mainly rainforest to an elevation of 300m. About half way around, a short side track will take you to a lookout on the summit of Mt Lumley Hill where you get views along the coast to the north of Cairns.”
