Local Histórico
“Old town is Budva’s trademark, and one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic Sea. At around 2,500 years old it’s a beautiful and historical site. A wander through the town reveals ancient churches and palaces, all crafted from local grey stone. Most of the churches are closed, but you can visit the citadel and see some of the ancient artifacts in the town museum. The Citadel itself and the museum in the old town are excellent places to learn about the history of Budva. Don’t miss the square in front of Santa Maria del Punta church, with its gorgeous view of the ancient church overlooking Ričardova Glava Beach.”

History Museum
“The Old Town Museum, housed in a building dating from the early 19th century, has permanent exhibits of archaeological and ethnographic collections, and on the ground floor of the museum is a lapidarium with valuable examples of stone plastic. The archaeological collection consists of objects found during archaeological excavations in Budva (Hellenistic gold, various vases, jewelry, decorations, tools, cutlery, glassware, clay, silverware ...) dating from the 5th century BC to the Middle Ages, bringing together the cultures of the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs in this area. Gold earrings and a brooch featuring an eagle with a boy in his claws, which is related to the myth of Zeus and Ganymede, are especially valuable. The ethnographic collection contains items from this area from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. The archaeological collection has more than 1200 and the ethnological collection has 450 objects.”

Local Histórico
“The first mention of Budva’s citadel was in 1425, but archaeologists believe this was the site of an acropolis in ancient times. The acropolis was traditionally built on the highest point, with sheer cliff below it. From here, a settlement could be defended easily. The citadel has been consistently expanded and upgraded through the various empires that have ruled Budva. The biggest part of the citadel is the wing of barracks, built by the Austro-Hungarians in 1836. Inside the citadel you’ll find a small library and a little museum. You’ll also find the ruins of Santa Maria in Castello Church (12th – 14th centuries). There’s not a lot to see in the citadel, but it’s a good place to grab a cold beer and enjoy the views of the Budva Riviera and Saint Nikola island.”
