Localização

Calatafimi-Segesta, Sicília, Itália

The Town of Calatafimi counts just fewer than 6,000 inhabitants and is very good for stocking up on local provisions, offering a good choice of local food shops such as butchers, bakers, green grocers as well as small supermarkets and, for those of you with a sweet tooth, typical Sicilian cake shops “pasticcerie” and ice cream shops “gelaterie”. It is famous in Italy for being “the theatre of Garibaldi’s first victory in over the Bourbons troops of Naples in 1860 on his triumphant march to forge the Unification of Italy”.
If you are interested in learning more about Contrada San Giovanni, where Egesta is located, Calatafimi and the local history you might enjoy reading "Calatafimi: behind the Stone Walls of a Sicilian Town", written by Angus Campbell (Giles De La Mare Pub Ltd, 2008, ISBN-10: 1900357283), a local Englishman and historian who loved the area and its people.
The first major battle fought by Garibaldi during the liberation of Italy took place in 1860 at Calatafimi, a small township in the western mountains on the island of Sicily. But Calatafimi is much more than just a historic site. This lush guide examines every aspect of the town, including its long and eventful history, its architecture and geology, and its rich customs, traditions, and religious festivals. The proud spirit of independence among the townspeople is captured by both contemporary interviews and the accounts of numerous foreign visitors over the centuries, among them te 19th-century author Samuel Butler. This is an enchanting history and cultural study of a town rife with eccentricity, respectability, and charm.
