I join everyone else's comments about what an amazing opportunity it was to be a small part of Wigtown for a week. The flat was far larger than I had realized and we were thrilled to have the two beds. I will miss the window seat with its views to all the town activity. Running the shop was a delight. Wigtown is a special place.

Staying at The Open Book is a book lover's dream and an experience you will never forget. The shop: Running the shop is easy--don't worry if you don't have any previous experience as a bookseller (or in retail, for that matter). Ask the book festival volunteers if you have any questions (they are a wonderful bunch), but most of the answers you seek you'll probably find in a couple of binders behind the counter, written either by the volunteers or by past Open Book residents. The shop is small, cash only, and the books are for the most part used and donated from various sources around Wigtown. You can organize the shop however you like, create window displays, host a reading, etc. Don't forget to chat with your customers, and update the shop's blog and social media accounts! You can make your own hours, keeping in mind that the shop tends to be busier in the afternoon than the morning (although our stay was in the summer--I imagine winter would be rather quiet all day). The flat upstairs: Clean and fully equipped (cookware, towels, laundry machines, etc.) with local histories and guidebooks, and a WINDOW SEAT (tip: don't fight over the window seat) that overlooks the center of town. One thing to note is that the flat gets rather cold--we spent evenings by the space heater. Maybe we should have packed warmer clothes? Anyway, remember when you're packing that the flat and shop may be colder than you expect. Also, it rains a lot in Wigtown. Wigtown: Wigtown is small, with a population of about 1,000. Everyone knows everyone, and gossip travels fast. That's great news for Open Book residents! You'll receive lots of friendly local visitors, who can tell you about the history of the shop, history of the town and region, places to visit in the area, etc. Definitely go to the other bookshops in town and introduce yourself to the sellers as The Open Book's current resident, too. Getting there: Wigtown is about 2 hours from Glasgow Airport and 2 hours, 45 minutes from Edinburgh Airport. You'll want to hire a car and drive there, that way you can easily go be a tourist when you're not running The Open Book. Do make time to go exploring--this is a holiday, after all!

If you dream about an experience in a village, in a lovely flat, surrounded by the irresistible green of the countryside and the view of a bay : this is the place. You feel free to run the little bookshop the way you like, that really is like having your own activity for some days and a lot of creativity springing from it. I couldn't help wandering around the landscape when I was not in the shop. Do it by yourself or in company, in the sun or in the rain, it will be awesome anyway. If you want to explore more, just take a bus. We met incredibly amazing people who were capable of turning our hopes into reality.
