This calm and rustic farmhouse includes traditional features and a wood-burning stove to accommodate between 6-8 adults as well as a baby and a child. The house makes the most of its location amongst lush green rolling hills, with beautiful views.

O espaço
Ca’Gallo is a traditional farmstead set in the beautiful hills of Rancitella just 8 miles from Urbino. It sits on a promontory of hillside surrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife.

The house is entered on the first floor comprising a large kitchen-diner with wood-burning stove, leading to a shaded terrace for outdoor dining. There are two comfortable bedrooms with kingsize orthopeadic beds and a compact bathroom with shower.

From the kitchen a staircase leads you to the ground floor where you will find a sitting room with French windows onto the front piazza of the house and a kingsize sofa-bed. There is a large and well-equipped family bathroom and a beautiful bedroom, also with French windows to the front, with two small double beds, perfect for the flexible needs of family groups.

There is a large collection of books in the house for guests to read while visiting. They cover art, architecture, history, politics as well as fiction and poetry. There is also a stereo and collection of CDs to listen to. We have recently installed Wifi, which offers fantastic service.

The house is part of a group of 3, originally owned as one house by a local family. The other two houses are still owned by members of that family who visit and retain a deep connection to the land their ancestors worked. This house is far from any sense of the rush and stress of modern, urban life.

Onde você estará

Urbino, Marcas, Itália

Beautiful views and walking country surround the house and is close to the medieval hilltop city of Urbino. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche is housed in the Palazzo Ducale built by Federico de Montefeltro in the second half of the 15th century and has paintings by Piero della Francesca as well as other Renaissance artists. The palace itself is astonishing both inside and out as Federico drew designers and architects from all over Italy and Europe to build it. Beside the Galleria is the Duomo, a light and airy cathedral with steps to sit on and watch the world go by.

Apart from art and architecture, Urbino is beautiful to walk around, with few cars permitted into the historic centre. Whilst walking through narrow streets you suddenly catch glimpses of the astonishing landscapes outside the city walls. The Piazza della Repubblica is the hub of the town with bars, cafés and restaurants around a central fountain. Outside the walls are more modern conveniences – supermarkets, a hospital and other services.

There are many beautiful villages, hamlets, churches and restaurants to visit in the area – just going for a drive can be an experience; the road from Urbino to Rancitella via Montesoffio is stunning.

Urbino is also well positioned for more ambitious day or overnight trips. Rome is 4 hours away by coach or car, Bologna 2 hours , Florence and Siena both 3.5 hours. Gubbio, 1 hour away, is an outstanding example of a medieval town whose narrow streets wind up to one of Umbria’s finest piazze.

South west, some two hours away, lies the beautiful town of Assisi, home of Italy’s patron saint, St Francis. The frescoes in the great basilica represent some of the finest examples of the art in Italy and the upper part has now been restored and re-opened after the 1997 earthquake.

Other towns of great interest within less than two hours reach of Urbino include Perugia, Arezzo, Spoleto, Ravenna and Rimini.

Back in Le Marche places to visit include San Leo, Loreto, Jesi, Macerata, Pesaro and Ascoli Piceno. the castle of Frontone in the shadow of the Appennines in front of San Cristoforo, the monastery of Fonte Avellana, immortalised by Dante, the market town of Pergola , and the fortress towns of Mondavio and Corinaldo. At Frasassi, you will find a remarkable series of caves which includes the largest single cavern in Europe and some of the most extravagant stalagmites/tites you are ever likely to see.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants to eat at in Urbino and the surrounding towns and villages. Our favourties are Al Cantuccio in the centre of Urbino and the interestingly named Paradise in Borgo Massano where the pizza is the best you’ve ever eaten.

There is a market on Saturdays in Urbino. It is in the car park at the top end of Via Raffaelo and sells the usual fruit/veg, clothes/shoes, household goods, salami, ham and cheeses as well as delicious porchetta (slices of whole, roast pig) and fried fish. Just above this market is the Fortezza Albornoz, with a fantastic panoramic view of the Palazzo Ducale and Urbino, as well as a children’s playpark and bar, which does a lovely lunch.

In hot weather, the options for swimming are a range of local pools, a visit to the seaside – Fano is the closest beach 40 minutes drive away, or wild swimming in the river Metauro near Mercatello sul Metauro, 45 minutes drive from Rancitella . There are public swimming pools at Montecalvo in Foglia (20 minutes), Capone (30 minutes) and a pool suitable for small children at Miniera (15 minutes). We can use the Country House Hotel pool at Monte Olivo, only ten minutes away. We also have a paddling pool available at the house for babies and small children on hot days.

We are a London family who loves to make the most of this great city. We enjoy music, art, cinema, eating delicious food we make at home or find in local restaurants. We also love to go on holiday, often in the UK (Wales, Norfolk, Cornwall) and also to Italy and Spain. We want guests to enjoy our house which is comfortable but not flash! We also hope that they use it as a base to get to know the vibrant local area and people, much as we hope to get to know the places and people that we visit.

Durante sua estadia

We live in London, so sadly will not be able to meet our guests. The house has two neighbouring houses. The friendly owners live in central Urbino but come to Ca'Gallo most afternoons. Another neighbour comes to clean the house and is available to help in case of need.
