Roma, Lácio, Itália
Tivoli is one of the oldest towns in Lazio and one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Italy. It is located at the foot of the Monti Lucretili, a splendid naturalistic landscape, formed by extensive valleys and plains which act as a border between Lazio and Abruzzo. It is crossed by the Aniene, a river whose course is slowed down here by waterfalls. What to see here: Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa), one of the most important and largest archaeological sites (80 hectares) in Italy, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, an imperial residence from the 2nd century AD and country refuge of the Emperor Hadrian; Villa d'Este, a monumental Renaissance villa, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, with fascinating frescoes, choreographic terraced gardens and scenographic fountains, conceived and built between 1550 and 1572 by Cardinal d'Este; Parco Villa Gregoriana, a large natural area of historical and landscape excellence commissioned by Pope Gregory XVI in 1835 and salvaged by the FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund), built around the course of the Aniene river which includes caves, little waterfalls and the Grande Cascata (Great Waterfall). Here, right in the town centre, you can immerse yourself in an evergreen nature enriched by the colours of those plants of exotic taste typical of the 19th century, and you can visit the ruins of the splendid Villa di Manlio Vopisco (1st century AD) and the two Temples of the Acropolis, symbol of the town of Tivoli. And also: the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of the Sibyl, the Temple of the Cough, the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor, the Rocca Pia. Tivoli's charm is also linked to the local food and wine tradition, characterised by a consistent agricultural and popular connotation, linked to the processing and production of the typical products of the land, such as the pizzutello grape and the extra virgin olive oil of the Terre Tiburtine, and to the fishing of the Brown Trout, native to central Italy, which is the most popular fish found in the waters of the Aniene. You should also try: scafata (fava bean soup), pizza cresciuta (typical Easter cake) and pangiallo (typical Christmas cake).
