•Contoocook (pronounced con-TOOK-uk) Lake is a 344-acre water body. The lake, along with Pool Pond, forms the headwaters of the Contoocook River, which flows north to the Merrimack River in Penacook, New Hampshire. The lake is classified as a warm water fishery, with species including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white perch, yellow perch, black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, chain pickerel, and horned poutIt. It is clean and swimmable. Feel free to use our kayak and explore. There is a public beach at the opposite end of the lake.
•Mt. Monadnock is only 12 minutes from the house and offers beautiful hikes. There are several routes up and down so ask the park rangers for advice…and a map!
•For groceries – Both Market Basket and Hannaford’s are large grocery stores, about 6 minutes away up route 202. There are local farm markets that offer great produce in the summer. There is a Walmart about 6 minutes away for anything you may have forgotten.
•Peterborough:
oOnly 20 minutes away, Peterborough is home to the first free public library in the United States. It is also home to the MacDowell Colony, an artist’s colony founded in 1904 by Marian MacDowell, a pianist. Over the years, an estimated 7,700 artists have been supported in residence, including the winners of at least 79 Pulitzer Prizes, 781 Guggenheim Fellowships, 100 Rome Prizes, 30 National Book Awards, 26 Tony Awards, 24 MacArthur Fellowships, 9 Grammys, 8 Oscars, and 8 National Medals for the Arts. Among the artist and the works they created in Peterborough are:
Aaron Copland composed Appalachian Spring
Spalding Gray wrote The Impossible Vacation
Leonard Bernstein competed his Mass
James Baldwin wrote Giovanni’s Room
Willa Cather wrote Death Comes for the Archbishop
oCathedral of the Pines is charming and worth a visit.
oRestaurants we like:
Emma’s – just up the street, is good pub food (and a good black bean burger).
Best ice cream is Kimball Farm, in Jaffrey. Be forewarned that a small is bigger than the average head.
Sunshine Café in Jaffrey is really good.
In Peterborough, there are many options – 12 Pine, the boulangerie, Aesop’s Table, and Café de Olla (for burritos) are all good.
oJust outside Peterborough is Eastern Mountain Sports, where you can find great outdoor equipment and clothes at a good price.

As ex-pats living in Africa, we bought our cabin in NH so our family could have a place that was grounding and a home base. We both work in social enterprise (businesses aiming for social impact), and our kids love nothing more than paddling around the lake and s'mores by the campfire.
