My partner and I had such an amazing stay at Tom's Hut. It was one of the highlights of our time on the South Island! There was no shortage of things to do - we explored around the property, found a nearby waterfall, spent time on the river, and borrowed some of Paul's bikes and …
Tom's Hut is Paul's bush home and has all you need for a quiet time away to relax, read, write, walk, fish or whatever and connect via a reliable wifi if necessary. Paul has a long history with the property and surrounding bush and a real passion to share his place and his knowle…
Our stay at Tom's hut was a real wilderness experience and a greate chance to explore the beautiful natur far away from everything. Paul is a very nice host and always happy to help. He also knows a lot about his land and he could show us a lot of historic sites. There is a …

Finn and his friend Reiner, a chef from Munich that had just flown 30hr from Germany to experience a place of solace, have found it. It is great meeting folks that know what they want, and I’m glad I have the opportunity to help. Thanks guys for your input to the place, you know you are most welcome to return, and I would endorse them as fantastic guests. August 2016

My stay at Tom's hut was an unforgettable experience. The hut is one of the few genuine (non-touristy) wilderness experiences left. In addition to this, Paul was a genuinely warm and helpful host. I really enjoyed sitting by the fire having a chat and going for a bike ride with P…

Amy was a great guest and she is most welcome to return at any time. She knew what she wanted for her holiday, and I think she found it; a week away without the interruption of modem life. Tom’s hut is a place for tired bodies somewhere away from the city life where you can recharge your batteries. It suits those that require a week or more, young and fit enough to handle the elements and enjoy nature. Those wishing to write a book, or music, painters painting a picture, this is a place where you would not be disturbed as Kawhaka Creek acts like a moat giving you peace of mind and tranquility.

A unique experience, which was as expected, remote (cut off for 2 days) quiet, with stunning views and total chill out time, much like staying in a very little house on the prairie, but high up on a hillside. Mod cons were wifi, a radio and fridge, but did have lighting, heating,…

Mike & Kerry were good communicators and arrived on time to put their feet up. As Kerry said, "time to chill out". The weather was fine on arrival and also on leaving, no big dramas with the rain and swollen creek to contend with; luckily they stayed for 5 days, nice to see a couple staying in locations and taking time to absorb the surroundings. Great guests that I would recommend. I hope your trip to Reefton goes well. March 2016

Visiting with Paul is an adventure. After a long drive on a gravel road, you meet him and he guides you along a much rougher and rockier road (go slow). For the final leg you leave your car behind, board his 4 wheel drive truck, and ford a stream with all your gear. If there has…

Thanks Tim, you raised some great points. Firstly much of the West Coast does not have cell phone coverage so if I am going to meet some one at the gate at a prearranged time I will not have coverage while waiting at the gate. If a party is going to be late they need to advise me 30 minutes before so we can arrange a new time to meet. The road marker 1804 on the Old Christchurch Road is 18 km form the state highway 6 at the Arahura bridge end of the road. The private road is normal locked if I am not home and the drive is rough but negotiable for 5 km to Kawhaka Creek. Yes the creek can be impassable; that is why I only accept bookings subject to the weather unless they are staying long term and does not matter if they are held up for a day or two. No excuses; this is a wilderness experience, the property is managed as a wildlife and historic park and many of the parties that have lived on the property since 1867 have left behind them what ever you see. My contribution has been the power system and the garden and orchard, some tree planting and of course the cattle and sheep I graze. I accept that some of my guests building skills where not able to withstand the weather and in time I will pick up the blown away materials. Some of my guests come back and stay longer spells which is great and suits me fine also. I have had musicians, authors and people looking for time out from their city lives, some built huts for themselves like Tom Picket a possum trapper. It is a place for tired bodies in no rush, so is probably not suited to the tourist on a two week visit of NZ. I am sorry the hut was too hot. We should have let the fire go out and you could have used the gas shower, but I guess in the rush to get you settled I overlooked showing it to you.
