O que você fará

Participants will harvest Japanese indigo, strip the leaves from the stems, and prepare an ice water bath using a blender. They will then have a half hour to do a little shibori work on a silk scarf if they so desire. Then the scarf will go into the bath. The scarf will emerge a blue green, and on swishing it rapidly in a rinse bucket it will turn a brilliant robin's egg blue.
We will also use an embossing machine to press the juice out of some leaves onto cotton cloth.
This is a morning activity, first because the color in the leaf is best in the morning, and second because the plants will still be in the shade.
I will provide information on how to grow it and where to get seeds.

Since 2006 I've been growing Japanese indigo and researching simple techniques to get blue and pink on natural fibers. When I first learned the technique, I was told that it only works on silk. I have broken out of that mold, and have developed techniques to get both blue and the indirubin pink on other protein fibers and on cellulose as well. I tell my students that "anyone whose mother will let them use a blender can do this." I have been teaching and continuing to develop the techniques since 2007. I teach mostly locally, but have traveled to far off places where there is an indigo patch. I love sharing these beautifully simple techniques with children and adults alike.

It was a fun educational experience. Eileen is kind and welcoming. Her knowledge on natural dying was thorough and her willingness to share the knowledge was refreshing. I would love to live next door to Eileen!

We really enjoyed our indigo class. We never would have taken at home but because we were on vacation and all on our trip were crafty in some way like fiber or paper crafts we took a class that would benefit all. It did! Eileen the teacher was a wonderful part of the whole experience.

We did the indigo experience with Eileen on an impulse and had a great time! Eileen’s home was easy to find and is in a cute town. We left with beautiful dyed scarves, increased knowledge about using indigo, and happy memories!
