O que você fará

Akumal is Mayan for "Land of the Turtles" so we will meet in the center of Akumal Puebla at the famous turtle sculpture.

Then we'll tour the newly painted murals by 90 artists from all over the world that have transformed the town overnight with their passion and talent so be sure to bring your camera!

As the first Akumal Arts Festival Art-Walk Guide,
I met the artists, and I'll to share personal stories about them with amusing anecdotes and well as give insight in to some of the symbolism and meaning behind these amazing works.

A new wave of environmentally conscious artists explore themes of nature, protest and social responsibility which connect them to a rich history of Mexican Muralism, from the Aztecs to Diego Rivera, to this new generation of street artists.

As we walk around the town, I will point out the church and school while sharing some of the fascinating local history of Akumal. We will stop for drinks at varying local business to help support the local community.

So when you are ready for 2 hour break from the beach, come to the other side of the bridge and explore the non tourist side of town. You will love it and have an authentic Mexican experience.
Other things to note
If you come by collectivo from the north get off just before the overpass and walk up the hill to the intersection. From south, walk west over the footbridge
and then to the main intersection.

I was honored to be the original Art Walk guide during the Akumal Arts Festival in November 2018. Over 90 artists came together to bring a fiesta of artwork to Akumal Pueblo to beautify the town for the local people, as well as future visitors. Learn about the artists, their inspiration and the meaning behind these brave new murals and the social impact it will have. We wish to continue to train new guides to bring jobs to the local people and support the business here. The tours will help support the festival and its outreach programs. You can be part of helping us to continue annually.

We will explore the beautiful Murals of Akumal Puebla and discuss their artistic and social significance. I will give you a brief history of the origins of Mexican Muralism and how it continues to be a vibrant form of expression and reflection of current culture. As we wind through the streets, I will point out the local church, school and various business that I hope you will come back to. We will end at the huge murals that cover the bridge.

Overall great tour with a large focus on the Akumal bridge. Joan is very knowledgeable about the Akumal Arts Festival and background around the murals. Would have liked to have used the time left in the schedule to see and understand more about the city murals.

I loved the tour through Akumel. The art was phenomenal and Joan was able to provide background, history and meaning. You can tell that Joan is passionate about what she does and is involved in every aspect of the Art Shows. I can't say enough about the art. We walked the town and went by the bridge and took millions of pictures. It was a great day. Thank you!

It's not just a tour where you take pictures, there is a story behind every art. Ce n'est pas juste une tournée pour prendre des photos, il y a une histoire derriere chaque art.

We really enjoyed our time with Joan on the Akumal street art tour. Joan has a wealth of knowledge of art and is very passionate about the local arts community. We also liked that we got a mini-tour of Akumal in the less touristy parts.

Joann was an amazing guide for an amazing project. In just 3 days during an art festival last year, dozens of art pieces were created throughout the small town of Akumal — and they are stunning! Joann gave us great insight into many of the murals and how the festival came about. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you, Joann!
