O que você fará

We look forward to welcoming you into the Stevenson House, the historic childhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson, author of "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," "Treasure Island," and other famous works. You will have an unique chance to see behind the facade of an historic building in Edinburgh's New Town, which is also a living family home and the place where Scotland's most-read author grew up. Hear what it was like for him as he struggled to become a writer, exploring Edinburgh's heights and depths, and learn about the life of today for the family that lives here. At the end, you'll be treated to home-baked cakes and tea or coffee in the formal dining room, and you'll learn more about life in Stevenson's day and now.

Please be aware that, being a nineteenth-century family home, the house is not wheelchair friendly. To access the house you will need to climb seven steps from the street. Fully to enjoy the experience you will need to be able to climb, and descend, a flight of about twenty-four steps in your own time.
Other things to note
Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs and if you are intolerant of gluten, nuts, or dairy products. There are steps! 7 to the front door and 24 up to the drawingroom where we will enjoy part of our experience.

My family has lived in the Stevenson House since 1992, and it has been my husband's family home since 1971. With our children, we love to welcome guests to this historic home and to share our knowledge and experience of the house and its most famous inhabitant, the author Robert Louis Stevenson. I'm a graduate of the École Hôtelière de Lausanne, and I have three decades of experience in hospitality. My husband John is a lawyer by training, but by calling he is a guide for explorers in Edinburgh.

The moment you enter the house it feels like you’ve stepped into the 19th century. John is very knowledgeable and a great storyteller; it was a pleasure to listen to him and learn about literature and the works of RLS. We are very grateful for the welcome given by John and Felicitas, they are very thoughtful and they even made a delicious birthday cake for my partner! A unique experience that is worth every second from the moment you step in the house. Thank you, John and Felicitas!

I had a lovely time visiting the Stevenson home and meeting John. He was extremely knowledgeable, not only about RLS, but also about the history of Edinburgh. I only wished I had gone on the experience sooner, as he had such great recommendations for my visit. The home is beautiful and worth a visit even without its Stevenson connection; I enjoyed learning about its quirky features, such as the bells once maintained by a trained ferret. The tea was delicious and they provided more cakes than I could possibly have eaten! This was a highlight of my trip and highly recommended for anyone with even the slightest interest in literature or history!

My son and I had so much fun learning about the life and times of Robert Louis Stevenson. The house is absolutely stunning and John was so knowledgeable about everything RLS and also about many many other authors. Such a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
