O que você fará

During this tour you will get the unique opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to rescue and rehabilitate local sea turtle and seal species. We will tour through the different areas in our hospital including the rescue center, lab, treatment room, and animal rehabilitation areas (patient numbers vary depending on the time of year). We will discuss the different species that we see in our local waters, common natural behaviors of these animals, their protection status, and the best practices for observing these animals in their natural habitat. We will also go through the common reasons that we see these animals coming into our hospital facility, the procedures and care that goes into getting them back to health, and releasing them back into the wild.

I am the Education and Volunteer Coordinator for the New York Marine Rescue Center. A non-profit organization the rescues and rehabilitates sea turtles and seals. I have my degree in Marine Vertebrate Biology and have been working with these animals for the last 6 years. Growing up on Long Island sparked my love for the ocean and its inhabitants. Nothing makes me happier than to share my knowledge and passion for these animals with others.

Jill gave our tour and she was great—friendly and really knowledgeable. We learned it is the off-season for animals in need of rehabilitation, so we met one permanent resident of the rescue center and learned a great deal about the work done in the busy season. It was a great experience and so interesting to learn a bit more about wildlife rescue and marine biology. Thank you!

We loved our unique behind-the-scenes tour of the sea turtle and seal hospital and rehabilitation area offered by the NY Marine Rescue Center located at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead! Our host Katy could not have been more knowledgeable or enthusiastic about her work at the center. The topics covered on the tour were interesting and well-organized. Katy was a gracious and personable host ably fielding our many questions. We heartily recommend this special tour to others! One note to be aware of for planning purposes: the Aquarium has a separate admission and, if you are planning to visit the Aquarium, you may be required to fit that visit in before your hospital tour to avoid exposing the permanent Aquarium residents to pathogens that might be carried by the wild animals in the care of the NY Marine Rescue Center.

We enjoyed our private tour with Nicole because we got ask all of questions! It highlighted the minimal resources and facilities rescues have to work with and emphasized the need for awareness about global warming and trash dumping effects on wildlife.

The tour we had was fascinating. Nicole was delightful and clearly loves working with the turtles and seals. Our teenage son has been thinking about studying marine biology and Nicole was very open to answering all his questions and was very generous with her time. This is a great experience for anyone with an interest in the valuable work that the hospital does - and the animals really are cute! Thanks so much Nicole! Just make sure you do the the aquarium first, as it's not possible to go back in following the hospital tour due to possible cross infection.
